ANDY WEBSTER
35 cymbals, stands, DC motors, solar panels, and variable sunlight and cloud. Dimensions (variable) – example = 20ft x 8ft x 3ft.
Dawn Chorus is a solar powered kinetic sound installation made up of 35 cymbals, each paired with a DC motor and solar panel. The motors are powered directly by daylight received through the solar panels, and have flexible attachments that strike the cymbals when activated. The installation responds automatically to changing daylight and cloud cover, producing varying percussive sounds or falling silent depending on the available solar energy.
The project was supported by the Waterfront Gallery, University of Suffolk, UK.
