35 cymbals, stands, DC motors, solar panels, and variable sunlight and clouds. Dimensions (variable) – example = 20ft x 8ft x 3ft.
Dawn Chorus is a solar-powered kinetic sound installation comprising 35 cymbals, each paired with a DC motor and a solar panel. The motors are powered directly by daylight received through the solar panels and have flexible attachments that strike the cymbals when activated. The installation responds automatically to changing daylight and cloud cover, producing varying percussive sounds or falling silent depending on the available solar energy.
The Waterfront Gallery at the University of Suffolk, UK, supported the project.
