42 YEARS: THE REMATERIALISATION OF AN ART OBJECT FROM 1952 TO 1994

And Alan Wilkie………. is going to book him for that. I think thoughtless is the word at times with Martin Keown, Martin. Because he read the situation, he won the header. Now, all he's got to do is just hold his position. Force Jones wide, look at Jones, he's two yards from the touchline. Can't go anywhere. And what does Martin Keown do?...... Bundles him over, gets booked. Worse than that, gives a free kick away in a dangerous area… [00:00:00] … Rush…. Fowler…………. Well, there's Keown's error. Fully punished……….. 26 minutes gone. Well, I said worse than that was to give the free kick away. Because they weren't under any pressure. They get a bit of luck here, Liverpool. It drops to Fowler. And on that left foot, was there any other end product going to come out of that than the net bulging? He doesn't often miss them. He just lifted it enough. Seaman diving along the ground. Fowler gets it up a yard off the ground. And it's in the back of the net [00:01:00] … …………. He had a couple of games against Arsenal…in, uh, his first season, and didn't score. And as a young man who, uh, studies the game closely and knows all about Arsenal's, uh, defensive attrition, he'll be very proud……….of giving Liverpool the lead……………. Arsenal have had some very good results here in recent times………… But Robbie Fowler……offering, uh, encouragement, for the home side today, that this might be a better day for Liverpool…………………… Rush………………… One or two Arsenal arms went up…….. Looking across at the linesmen [00:02:00] … as the ball dropped for Fowler…………. Campbell…. I think there are two reasons, Mark. One, the offside that maybe they thought Fowler was in a position that he was offside. And another, there was a slight suspicion that perhaps an arm was used in…the initial contact……… I'm sure that's something we can have a look at as soon as the play dies down a little….. We might have to wait for the halftime whistle for that… Bjørnebye……………. It's been, uh, one, ner, early season feature. Just look at this again Ally, as you can see there, Ian Rush goes in. Now, you can't quite see it, but there are suggestions there that an arm was used. There are suggestions there that Fowler's standing in an offside position. Lee Dixon's certainly near him……….. But he doesn't usually pass up an opportunity like that [00:03:00] ……….. McManaman………….. Fowler making a yard for himself. Oh, is it going in? It is! Two in two minutes for Robbie Fowler. They're going crazy here at Anfield………… Well, it didn't look a problem to me here……. Arsenal, look at the men they've got back. Four shirts, three against two in the edge of the 18-yard box. I thought he'd passed up the opportunity when he didn't hit it first time…….. But we talked earlier about Kevin Campbell not going to cross the goalkeeper. And this is exactly what we mean, Martin….. He drives it through Dixon's legs, across the face of Seaman's. And when you do that, the goalkeeper either touches it out, or it nestles in that far corner. What a couple of minutes for Robbie Fuller............................ Campbell [00:04:00] ……………but what about this from Liverpool, 8 goals and they've not yet played a game and a half…………………..Of that 8, three belong to Robbie Fowler……………………………. Wright………… Campbell and well played in the end David James ...............15 minutes to go to halftime, ..……………… Fowler has put some distance between Liverpool and Arsenal..……………………. Barnes, he's away again, is this going to be the hat-trick, it could still be….. It is! [00:04:33] …………. That's incredible….what a cool head…..poor David Seaman, he must have thought he'd stopped the hat-trick, great run from Fowler….. I tell you, he's just tucked in behind an international defender in Tony Adams. Seaman thinks he's done everything right, but how is this for a cool head? ………Unbelievable stuff.

42 YEARS: THE REMATERIALISATION OF AN ART OBJECT FROM 1952 TO 1994 (2025)

118 x 84 cm, giclée archival print, and 12” Vinyl (edition of 25).

John Cage's 4'33" was first performed on August 29, 1952, by pianist David Tudor at Maverick Concert Hall in Woodstock, New York. Forty-two years later, almost to the day, on August 28, 1994, Robbie Fowler scored three times against Arsenal at Anfield in just four minutes and 33 seconds.

This work asks: What if Cage’s piece were combined with the energy of sports commentary that describes Robbie Fowler's hat-trick—a feat that, by coincidence, took exactly 4'33" to complete? The artwork uses the full transcript of the commentary as an accidental re-performance of Cage's score.
